Striker F.C Copa del Rey Tournament makes Sun News Headlines!
175-plus teams converging on Las Cruces for soccer tournament
LAS CRUCES — The Las Cruces Striker Futbol Club will host the 2nd Annual Copa Del Rey soccer tournament this weekend. Roughly 175 teams from around the New Mexico/west Texas region will be present at the tourney, as well as two from Oregon and one from Arizona, with age requirements ranging from under 6 years old to under 19. Play will be held predominantly at the High Noon Soccer Complex as well as New Mexico State University and Meerscheidt Recreation Center. Aside from the teams participating, there will also be Division-I coaches and scouts, including U.S. National Team scout Juan Carlos Michia. Michia will be focusing on the under 14 and under 15-year-old teams. "To get a national scout here, that's a big deal," Striker coach Freddy Juarez said. "You could go to big cities and not get that. The kids have a chance to showcase their skills. Of course they're excited about that opportunity." The Striker Club has been recognized as an underground hotbed of soccer talent. Most recently, former player Edgar Castillo competed on the Mexico National Team while Vista Middle School student Isaias Juarez plays for the under-14 U.S. National Team. "We're all very excited," Juarez said. "It's not another typical tournament. We're playing to win, but the kids are also playing to catch someone's eye as well. It's a big deal for the players." The competition will kick off tonight at 6 p.m. at High Noon with action hitting full swing on Saturday at 8 a.m. Sunday will feature the semifinals and championship rounds, beginning at 8 a.m.
